CAPE TIMES THEATRE AWARDS

An annual event eagerly awaited is The Cape Times Theatre Awards 2002. Inaugurated to promote amateur theatre in the Cape Peninsula and surrounding areas, this will be the 32nd staging. Watch the Cape Times for nominations for this year - remember how well The Anchor Players did last year? The list of nominations will be announced from about 15 January onwards.

As in previous years the Awards Ceremony will be held in The Little Theatre in Orange Street, Cape Town. They will be on the evening of Tuesday 5 February at 7.00 for 7.30 pm at a cost of R35 per head (nominees free). Nominees and their partners will be sent an invitation by post but other members wishing to be a part of the audience are to please contact Sue Bolton at 786 2565. Payments are to be made in advance to your secretary, Jean Glass - Box 93 Simon's Town, 7974

ESTELLE KNOTT-CRAIG

Anchor Players are sad to hear of the death of Estelle Knott-Craig.

Estelle was a doyen of both Anchor Players and all local theatre and amateur dramatic societies. Older members will remember her as both an excellent director and as an active member of our society. Younger members will know her as the critic for the local 'False Bay Echo', where she always had kind words of encouragement for our local productions.

Estelle continued to contribute to the theatre scene although in her eighties, and still saw all the local shows until recent ill-health made this impossible.

This much respected lady will be missed by all who knew her. Our deepest sympathies go to her family. May her star continue to shine.

WAIT UNTIL DARK

'Wait Until Dark', a play written by Frederick Knott - is to be our first production for 2002 - a real thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat! Will you be able to take the suspense?

The production is to be directed by our own Sue Bolton, and can be seen live at the Theatre in the Dockyard from 11 April. Sue is looking for a talented cast to have fun with her on this one, watch for the audition notice for more details if you want to give it a shot. All are welcome to try!

MEMBERSHIP 2002

Unfortunately, this year membership fees will have to rise, in order to cover mailing costs - please let us have your email address if possible, as this is a cheaper way to stay in touch - and the escalating cost of rights for productions, amongst other things. The proposed fees for 2002 will be R40 for a single member and R50 per couple. A new family membership will also be introduced at a cost of R75 for four people.

However all is not doom and gloom. Although this increase will bring us in line with the fees charged by other societies, we will also introduce a R5 discount on seat prices to paid-up members. This discount will replace the pensioners and childrens discounts that have previously been offered. Membership cards will be issued on payment of subscriptions, and must be produced at the box office in order to claim discount.

Block bookings in multiples of 10 will also enjoy a discount of R5 per seat but will have to be paid for in advance of the show.

Membership can be renewed at our AGM, or by post to Anchor Players, Box 73, Simon's Town 7995.

NUNSENSE

What an amazing show!
Not only has it been a first for the Amateur Dramatic Societies to band together to put on a joint touring production, it has been a fantastic success in every way.

The production was led, and skilfully directed by Heather MacClachlan, who worked so hard to get this show 'on the road'. Of course it always takes more than one person, and Heather had great strength in her team, especially stage manager John Farrell who moved the set through three different venues, and got it to work perfectly every time. The music side of the show was directed by the very talented Wilna Viljoen, who along with the equally amazing talents of choreographer Kyla Thorburn made this a musical to remember.

And so far I haven't even mentioned the cast!!

What a talented bunch of ladies we saw on stage. It was never a drawback to them to wear a nuns' habit. They all managed to stand out individually in their costumes, every one creating their own character, playing it to perfection - and still working in a perfect team. And what voices!

Audiences and critics alike loved it, and at the end of the run I am pleased to report that all three societies involved made a nice profit. Thanks once again to everyone involved in this production, and there are lots of you I have not mentioned, who I know worked hard behind the scenes to make it the success it was. Thanks guys.

PEOPLE

  • Thanks to our appeal for members to join our dynamic team on the Committee, we've had a great response, with some very talented people agreeing to come on board. Details will be announced soon, but it means we can look forward to an exciting year ahead.
  • Heather MacClachlan is currently in the USA, and we wish her a very restful holiday after the fantastic job that she did directing Nunsense. She plans to visit our friend (last years Best Actress) Lindsay Hochfelden in New York whilst she's there, so say hello for us Heather.
  • Congratulations to Neil Littleton - our Anchor 'Doctor in the House' - who has passed his final exams to specialise, and is soon to take up a new post as Head of Haematology at Tygerberg Hospital. Well done Neil! (Don't have any plans to appear in his Theatre - Ed).
