VOLUME 4, ISSUE 8 IN THIS ISSUE In this December edition of The Anchorage, I will introduce you to our blockbuster musical - Nunsense - unveil the events of the Inter Society Quiz, and give you some essential tid bits of information that should last you through to 2002! A BIG FIRST FOR NUNSENSE The first amateur presentation of this hilarious Broadway award winning musical will be presented jointly by Anchor Players, BATS, and Hottentot's Holland Dramatic Society - another first for Cape Town Amdram Theatre and a step towards further collaborations involving different societies. Nunsense is a hilarious send-up about the Little Sisters of Hoboken and their attempt to raise enough money to bury four of their fellow nuns. It seems that, while five of the nuns were off playing bingo, the convent chef accidentally killed the other 52 nuns with a lethal recipe for vichyssoise. In order to raise funds to bury these sisters, the Reverend Mother starts a greeting card business. Catholic or not, the audiences will howl with laughter at the antics of the 'singing nuns'. In addition to the Mother Superior (Sheila Inglis), there's the warm and loveable Mistress of the Novices (Linda Barrans), the street-smart Sister Robert-Anne (Coleen van Staden), the sweet young novice, Sister Mary Leo (Amelia Bosman-Lowe), and Sister Mary Amnesia (Tracey Petersen) who can't remember her real name since a crucifix fell on her head. Filled with show-stopping numbers, Nunsense is a musical comedy for everyone - everywhere! Directed by Heather MacLachlan, with choreography by Kyla Thorburn, musical direction by Wilna Viljoen and lighting design by Ken Mitchell. Don't miss this opportunity to see five incredible nuns dazzle audiences with this spectacular show. Bookings now open - telephone 785 2466 to reserve your seats.
INTER-SOCIETY QUIZ The quiz began with our chairperson, Cole Cameron, presenting the Technical Questions, followed by Bunty West of the False Bay Echo with ones of a Historical nature. Sue Bolton tested the teams with questions about the local productions of 2001. When it was Deon Bisschoff’s turn to play Quizmaster, he surprised the teams with a request to perform various dance steps! This proved a challenge for some, with variations that we found rather amusing! The final sets saw choice Musical questions from jester Jeff Batt, and in keeping with her upcoming show, things Spiritual from Heather Mac. Between topics time-keeper Neil Littleton took a break and the panel of judges tallied up the scores, whilst the Nunsense crowd charmed us with some hearty singing, which the teams and the audience thoroughly enjoyed. Interval brought with it a tasty spread of finger food and more drinks and music. The teams seemed to be looking forward to once more joining in the contest, and the audience were welcoming the questions ahead. Prior to the final totalling of scores, was the time for the teams to do their improvisational sketches, which they had hurriedly devised during their all too short break. The teams resultant pieces brought immense fun, with such styles as Shakespeare, Chekov and Pinter being used with incredible imagination and wit. In the end there had to be a winner, and this year, the undisputed victors in the Inter-Society Quiz was The Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Next year we look forward to attending the quiz - hosted by our winner - and hope it will be as much fun as it was this year!
