THE world tour of the musical, PRINCE of AFRICA,
performed by the Grammy nominated African Children’s Choir
was launched in Simon’s Town
at the Theatre in the Dockyard on September 5 & 6.

The internationally acclaimed choir, now based in Simon’s Town, will next head for Singapore for the first leg of its world tour. The Prince of Africa is a family play/fairytale created specifically for the African Children’s Choir by international writer and director Frank van Laecke. A team from Belgium and the United Kingdom is directing the production.

The theme of the musical tale centres around the decisions a young boy has to make regarding the life he has come to know in a Western society, and his native roots in Africa. After being stranded on an island off the African coast, the boy is guided by a mysterious figure during his journey home.

The African Children’s Choir was formed in 1984. Its members make up a group of 26 children between the ages of five and 12 years from different countries in Africa. During their time with the choir they act as ambassadors for the African continent, travelling all over the world and performing a variety of songs and tunes accompanied by drums and ethnic instruments.
Money raised by the choir has helped establish and support literacy schools and primary boarding schools in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana and Sudan. To date approximately 6 000 children have been educated and many more have received food and medical aid. Many former choir members have gone on to obtain university degrees and work as professionals and leaders in Africa.
