FROM THE CHAIR

Well, hello at last to all our members and friends.
It's been a while since our last newsletter and I apologise prof... profus... proffuws... a lot! All good things come to those who wait
We have all been working hard trying to get our act together so to speak, and I can honestly say without any more hesitation that we, the committee that is, have now got it together (waits for rapturous applause) ... ...!
Apart from a minor hiccup with Whodunnit (I suppose you could say that "We Didn't"... ha ha!) things are looking good.
Along with our other productions we have several interesting one off shows and concerts of which you will be informed of in due course, these will ensure that 'the Old Girl' is put to full use this year.
The PADA campaign will be keeping us very busy this year and I would like to ask all our members and friends to help support this campaign by coming to the Benefit concerts on the 2nd & 3rd of May. These concerts will be such a wonderful experience and the funds raised will go a long way to helping us help the victims of domestic violence and any donations to the campaign fund on those nights will be very welcome indeed.
We are attempting to redevelop the foyer and entrance this year to make it more accessible and comfortable, this will mean loosing a few rows of seats at the rear of the auditorium but it will allow more room for the front of house etc.
Also we need some help moving our costumes and belongings etc, from the old Committee room as the Navy in it's wisdom has asked us nicely to vacate the room a.s.a.p due to the fact that 400 sailors are moving in...! So, ANY VOLUNTEERS?       We have also been asked to help develop community theatre in the Old Library building. This facility will be developed to enable local communities to perform plays etc, and exhibit art and crafts. We can also utilise the LIBRARY THEATRE for smaller and more intimate productions as well as our own Members evenings. I will keep you posted on developments as they happen. Well, must be off now but if you want to chat or have any good ideas about shows or anything, give me a call at the office.
      Bye for now,
      Jeff Batt

AGM GREEN LIGHT

TAPS got the green light to proceed with a brand-new strategy and diversifying future at the crucial AGM held on 18 February. In a heart-warming speech by Rear-admiral J G (Koos) Louw, our firm connections with the SAN were highlighted, emphasising the importance of TAPS being selected to be instrumental in the Navy's Social Investment Outreach and PADA (Partners Against Domestic Abuse) initiative, as well as the MASIBAMBISANI HIV/AIDS Campaign.
Our contribution will be to produce a campaign and industrial theatre and drama programme to address this social issue: the catastrophic proportions of late and combating of this violent phenomenon. The Military Police, South African Police Service, Institute of Maritime Medicine (SAMS) and Nicro – together with Carehaven and the Salvation Army, join forces in immediately making available comfortable, caring services in the form of trauma centres, safe houses, legal assistance and counselling.
TAPS is proud to assist with the production of this drama. The script has been written by Jill Fletcher. The Drama 'A time for understanding' will première in Simon's Town in early July and then be taken to Port Elizabeth, Durban Cape Town and Saldanha Bay, aboard the Outeniqua as 'floating theatre'.
Special thanks, go to local businessman and entrepreneur Charles Bates, for the printing of the PADA pamphlet, Embossing Excellence for their excellent work on the t/shirts and caps and J & D Shipping Services for supplying the shirts and caps. And of course not forgetting our very good friends Richard and Beau at Sound Affinity for the PA System.
By being an active partner in this campaign TAP's motto "to be a vibrant part of the Simon's Town cultural scene, striving to develop a community based theatre programme fostering a love of the dramatic arts in all the people of the region" – will thus be augmented to include duty to the community as a whole.
Also in attendance were SAN Social Services head Major Kakana who joins our committee as 'Navy Liaison', and Ward councillor Nicki Holderness.
Acting chairman Jeff Batt reported on TAPS' 2002 emotional rock bottom resulting in few productions, but stressing the influx of talent and enthusiasm on the part of members, friends and the committee. Coupled with our new-found friends the WCCC and the extensive alterations to the stage, the Simonsberg Theatre will definitely become the local hub of exciting theatre and social events. If only we could realise our ultimate dream: rearranging the foyer as a social gathering space and further upgradings of our facilities.
Treasurer Lynn Moss read the Financial Report, reassuring us of a healthy bank balance. Matters arising were fervently discussed and an overall state of glowing wellbeing resulted in the members' acceptance of our adventurous future.
Thanks were given to the outgoing committee and the new committee was duly elected with a welcome aboard to...

An array of slick evergreen, show and operetta songs and dancing by some 2002 TAP stars Jeff Batt, May Abrahamse, Leon Dreyer, Aubrey Hindle and Leilani Beer, all supportively accompanied by Eve Gould, brought this happy AGM to a musical close - indeed "A night to remember".

THE BUSY YEAR AHEAD

Having struck the proverbial 'High C' at the AGM, TAPS will not rest on our laurels. Our 2003 CALENDAR brims and bursts with new scores:

Whodunnit Due to a shortage of available actors for the original dates, Whodunnit by Anthony Shaffer has been postponed until 2004. However, director Tony Stiglingh is investigating other possibilities. Details will be forthcoming once confirmed.

May - Fri 2 at 8.15 pm & Sat 3rd at 6.15 pm: PADA Benefit Concert in aid of the Partners Against Domestic Abuse campaign – featuring the Willie Van Zyl Sextet, the African Childrens Choir, the International Womens Choir, Janine Magnin, Jeff Batt, Paul Thom, Leon Dreyer, Albert Lintvelt, dancers and lots, lots more. Come early to avoid disappointment. R40 at the door.

      * July - Thu 24: Military Police Centenary Celebration Pageant produced by TAPS, including show, slides and lunch.

      * August/September: Center Stage2 – back by popular demand, more music and mayhem to cheer you up.

      * October - Fri 31: Navy Band Concert – an all time favourite!

      * December: John Osborne's The Entertainer Directed by Walter Hodges – need we say more?

      * Dates and/or times will be advised timeously.
2003 is certainly TAPS' heaviest and busiest in years, if not ever... and we're not finished yet!

CAMPAIGN TIME

TAPS successfully launched the PADA campaign 'A time for understanding' from a marquee tent at the Navy Festival. We are also pleased to assist Pick n' Pay with their Aids and HIV awareness production 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' produced by Art Vibrations Inc II, and performed by the children of Ocean View. This production is to be filmed at our theatre later this month prior to a performance at Capricorn Park. We hope to secure performances later in the year.

CAPE TIMES AWARDS

This thumb-holding and bear-hugging annual ceremony at the Little Theatre brought Western Cape amdram trophies to TAPS veterans:
Best Actor in a Musical:
Artistic Contribution:
Jeff Batt as Petrucio in KISS ME KATE, and
Belinda Burchell Batt and Jean Bruwer for CINDERELLA.
Sadly, it was not mentioned in February that John McConnell was also nominated for Best Cameo Performance as Baptista in KISS ME KATE – our apologies John!

PEOPLE

The Moss family have certainly assured their places in TAPS' gallery of stalwarts: Lynn as wizardly treasurer, Jennifer as youngest committee member ever, Mike as our publisher, and Karl as budding new-comer. Never to forget their delightful stage appearances! It is thus our remorse that both mother and daughter have left the committee. We trust that we will still enjoy their multiple talents in future, and wish them the very best in all sincerity.
Our director Sue Bolton has undergone her hip operation. Our thoughts stay with her for good health and maintaining that irresistible charm and undeniable genius.

DATES TO DIARISE

23 April to 3 May
    JOKING APART by Alan Ayckbourn
This British comedy is directed by Patrick Jordi for the Muizenberg Dramatic Society at the Masque Theatre
